Is it crazy to try to relocate an existing window?

Hi there folks,

We just bought a house and want to re-model the kitchen. However, the main window is only 72cm off the floor and opens inwards which means we can't really run the bench-top along that wall without serious compromises.

One solution would be to raise the entire window by about 20cm but I don't know if that would be feasible. Can anyone out there advise me?

Some information:
- two storey brick house built in 1926 (Oslo, Norway)
- Kitchen on ground floor
- old-style double glazed window in a timber frame (actually two sets of hinged panes. The outside ones open outwards, the inside ones inwards.)
- Window frame is about 140cm wide by 177cm high.

PS: I would hire in a professional to do the actual work.

depends on how it was fixed in, will it come out in one?

"state" of window when its out

 why not scrap the window, build up the brickwork and install a smaller (less high) window?

I'd go with this; raising the entire window (assuming you can get it out without damaging it), will require a new lintel above. This will involve building work, propping, installing & fixing the new lintel; & if Norway has similar Building Regulations to the UK, inspection & certification. Considerably more expense than just bricking up the bottom of the opening & buying a new & smaller window! ;)

Thanks for the responses, guys.

I decided to go with what you suggest.
