We would like to extend our patio, but don't just want lots of paving. Are there any eco friendly alternatives, possibly something like a camomile lawn? Any suggestions ?

I allways thought a patio is made of concrete, be it a slab or small slabs. so anything else and its no longer a patio.
That aside it depends on what you want, like the look of, you could consider decorative gravel, or bark, bonded rubber chips or.........

or ........ tumbled glass (recycled car windows - all the designer rage for patios), sunken logs (vertical, a bit like the Giant's Causeway), slate chipping look brill, old railway sleepers sunk so they're level (yes, I know sleepers have been done to death but they still are relevant), or .......
