HI there can anyone advise please, most of the houses round my estate have had there roofs re-tiled by the council the colour of the tiles are red, but i'am thinking of doing mine with gray tiles because i dont like the red, do you need planing permission for this.

A phone call to the council will be the most accurate way of finding out for sure!!

Planning permission is not required for re-roofing - unless you are in a 'designated area' such as a conservation area

You will need to apply for building regulations though, as this is a 'thermal element' under recent changes to the regulations.

This will also most likely force you to upgrade roof insualtion too, if you have not already done so

Thanks for the info folks just like to add the colour of the tiles before the council changed them to red were infact grey, another thing my house is a semi do i have to inform my neighbour about the work to be done?? dont think it would be a problem but you never know

Id inform your neighbor out of simple courtesy and he/she may well be up for getting theirs done and willing to share the cost. You may well get it cheaper !
