A couple of weeks ago we couldn`t open our front door. It is the type whereby you lift the handle and then turn the key to lock the door. I eventually managed to open it by putting a lot of pressure on the handle and force it down. We can open and lock the door ok but the handle is now very loose. Can I rectify this by simply putting a new handle on the door? If so do I go for the sprung or unsprung type? I guess that I probably broke a spring when forcing the handle down. I`ve read that some handles have their own springs whereas others use the lock mechanism springs. I would be grateful for any advice.

Take the handle off to see if its the spring, but I'd check the locking gearing you could have damaged that.Check it up and down the face plate
to see if any screws are loose or adjustments required as that sounds like it was the cause of the problems in the first place

More than likely the mechanism that's knackered. If you can, take the mechanism out of the door and look at the rear of the gearing case. A common problem is part of the gearing tearing through the rear of the casing, causing it to jam. Forcing the handle down gets it back into the casing, but the damage has been done. It'll work for a while, but eventually it'll die on you - best to get it replaced before that happens.
