Removing paint

I recently moved and the bathroom in my new apartment has ceramic tiles on the walls which have been painted over. The paint looks horrible and I started to chip it off. This is taking forever as some of the paint is REALLY stuck on. Any ideas that might make it easier to remove the paint?

The obvious answer is bog standard paint stripper. You paint it on and watch as the old paint bubbles up but --

Do you have a plastic bath? If so, I would use that stuff with great caution. I shudder to think what methylene chloride would do to acrylic!
