Our new back door needs to be given 2/3 coats of stain to preserve it. Can i ask for your recommendations. The door is oak as is the door frame.
Thanks,
pete

is it bare wood at the moment?
have a look at osmo uv protection oil if you want a clear finish.

in my opinion this type of finish is better than a varnish or stain that forms a skin that will eventually flake and peel. then you've got to use the same product or sand it right back.

this stuff weathers away gradually.

oak can be left untreated or oiled with linseed oil for example, it will go grey.
you may get problems with warping and swelling due to moisture changes though.

if it really is solid oak, and not a modern veneer fake, oil is the way to treat it.
