disconnecting gas appliance

as a d.i.y.er am i ok to disconnect and remove my existing boiler ready for an engineer to fit the new one[to keep costs down]

think of what could happen if you dont cap it properly and your house blows up and your family is killed, OK it is probably unlikely to happen but why take any chance with your familys safety as the price, the job itself is fairly straight forward, gas off, cap pipe, gas on, but there are checks to be made before and after and rules to follow depending on results etc,
