"ExpelC" was the chemical of which you speak a bit overated in my honest opinion , the truth is nothing removes soot better than a flue brush, scraper and a good vacuum cleaner! 
ExpelC only removes the burnt on residue AFTER brushing and scraping, and if the flue is adjacent to windows etc, make sure they're shut!
