Hi there,

Our boiler is having a constant problem...

The timer is set and boiler seems to have no problem coming on/off at the right times, however, the fan doesn't run and the heating and hot water do no work. The light next to the egg timer like symbol flashes. If I switch the boiler off then on again immediately (the switch on the boiler, not the mains), it fires up no problem and the heating and hot water are fine. However, when it switches off with the timer and then comes to the next on time, we have the problem again.

So far we have left the boiler running full time as it has been cold anyway but have also been switching on and off manually.

Can anyone give me a clue what is wrong/how easy it would be to fix/what sort of cost would be involved?

Thanks very much!

Get an RGI to have a look and diagnose the actual fault, you will then be able to ask him directly for a repair quotation, POSSIBLE causes-
Air pressure switch
slow to start fan
Sticking Gas valve
However without seeing the appliance it would be impossible to speculate further! ;)

Intermittent faults are almost impossible to diagnose from behind a keyboard.
You need a breakdown specialist, not just any RGI.

The egg timer symbol flashing donates a pump problem or lack of primary water flow in the appliance.

The boiler 'proves' this by way of the pressure differential valve. This checks for movement of water through the boiler at start up. Most common problem is this part requires replacing or the tubes serving it are blocked with debris. It is nothing to do with the fan/aps.

Best get an engineer who is experienced on Vaillant boilers.
