Yes, a bit of petrol did wonders after my wife got chewing gum on her shoes in a carpark and it was all over the mat in the car. Totally clean. An excellent tip.

I find that rubbing ice on the chewing gum works quite well because the gum goes hard and brittle and can easily be picked or flaked off.
