Not recommended! Animals, birds, spiders... could all set the thing off. The last thing you want is an intruder alarm that false alarms. Everyone will ignore it and you neighbours will get p155ed off!

Is the problem with a beam getting power to the far end ?.
If it is then with careful layout you can have both units at one end and a passive reflector at the far end. It is best if the sender and receiver are screened from each other to prevent stray from the sender reaching the receiver.

Europlex, I have used that type over very short ranges ( conveyor belts etc ) but over a long range the lower cost ( simple ones ) can get confused by reflections from an intruder close to the sensor being the same as that from the distant reflector.
The ones that measure the distance to the reflecting object are almost perfect but unfortunately (much) more expensive.
