I wish to replace a ceiling light, the new fitting has the usual L N E connections and states that it must be earthed. Not a problem until i discover the existing fitting does not appear to have an earth wire, Can i connect the earth from the new light to the screw holding the support bracket to the joist? :?:

Nope, reason why.......were are getting your earth from? is the joist metal. Looks like rewiring the circuit to obtain your earth or to the nearest lighting point were there is an earth.

it may also be the previous owner cut off the earth, problem is though, if they have done it to one how may others have they done it to, and what about the sockets, have they an earth?

Thanks for the info, If you are referring to plug-sockets then i can confirm these are earthed as i have recently replaced some old ones with new. I have not looked at light switches yet if thats what you meant.

We are having some building works done shortly which will involve electrical points being moved so i will get the electricians to sort the ceiling lights out - better to be safe then sorry!!

Thanks for the replies.
