Whistling Boiler

I have a Powermax 355 boiler with built in timer. Every morning it starts up to heat water and central heating. After just a few minutes it starts making a loud whistling noise. This noise lasts for about 20 - 25 mins when it gradually fades away then stops - although the boiler remains on as the thermostat has not yet turned it off. Anyhow I no longer need an alarm clock to wake me up in the morning! It works ok though - water and radiators get hot. At first I thought it may be kettling which I have read about but surely this can't be the case as the noise starts almost straight away after it has switched on. The other strange thing is that it doesnt often make any noise when it comes on in the evening. I have, however, heard the same noise coming from 1 or 2 other peoples houses in the street - yes its that loud! All houses are the same, probably with the same boiler.

The boiler is about 5 years old and was recently serviced. It made the same noise before and after the service. I have also recently had the pump replaced and some long rods of metal about 1.5 feet long (whatever they are but the old ones were rusty and some had broken). The pressure is currently 1 bar.

Please help!

I am experiencing this problem also. It is happening to me at night as well, though, or shortly after the burner light comes on. I have a Powermax 140 Open Vent model.

It started with a leak, that ruined most of my hallway - I took the cover off and tightened a screwthread where it was dripping, the flow switch according to my manual. I called a plumber to be safe, and upon switching the boiler on, the whistling started. He put some sealing tape around the air inlet pipe, and this coincided with the whistling stopping, so he and I felt job done.

However it is now doing it almost every day, and I can't find out where the noise is coming from or why. As with before, it stops after about 20 minutes. Can anybody help?

I am a Powermax service engineer and can tell you that this noise is usually caused by the premixed gas and air ratio being incorrect. To be correctly adjusted it needs to be set up using specialist equipment.I suggest you contact the Baxi service dept.-Heateam.Powermax is a Baxi company.

I happen to also work for baxi potterton powermax and have come accross this loads of times , the gas air valve as the other engineer says needs tweaking - (best solution is to trash the boiler as all powermax are sh*t and they are an insult to me as an engineer to be forced to work on them)

I too am having the same problem although the noise only lasts a few minutes and isn't really bothering me. Would there be any consequences if I left it alone and did nothing?

Your neighbours might beat you up?
I daresay baxi's callout is £90 or so but the problem is only going to get worse, meantime your boiler is running inefficiently - could be overheating or sooting up.

My boiler makes a banging noise maybe we could get together and form a band? ;)

Yes probably killed by the evil Powermax

Well as you're here, what about this "specialist equipment".
Will FGA and a manometer which measures a gnat's fart at 15 paces do?

The Ice Man and I are not dead but living happily now that we have both left Baxi. It took a while and a lot of treatment but we can both say HHHeateam without stuttering............almost.

That has taken you three years to respond to the suggestion that you had died.

As far as I am aware all those people are still alive. Although Chris needed a lot of African attention to keep him that way.

Not so sure about Powermax boilers though. Hopefully most of them are dead now.
