I have a old model maytag washer dryer unit. Dryer is on top of Washer combination, and the unit will not perform the wash cycle, and it seems as if something is burning, then it does go into the rinse cycle and performs greatly. Why would it miss this cycle is perhaps a timing belt or something

The belts on a Maytag are under the bottom panel of the washer, so if you can slide a mirror under your washer you can inspect them with a flashlight.

On Maytag washing machine, just as on most washing machines, the motor changes it's direction of rotation when it goes from agitate to spin.

On the front panel of the washer, near the bottom, look for a crease in the metal that hides the head of a screw from sight. Remove those two screws and swing the front panel upward to disengage the clips holding it to the top panel of the washer, and set the front panel aside.

Now, fire up your washer and watch the motor to see if the motor shaft is turning during the agitate cycle. If not, then the problem is likely to be in something called the "motor reversing relay" which you should find behind the console of the machine.

That relay reverses the connections to the start winding of the motor so that the motor turns backwards.

Also, in the mirror under the washing machine, you should see a large pulley that turns the drive shaft that runs through the middle of the machine. When the motor changes direction, the drive belt will turn that pulley in the opposite direction. Both the inside of the pulley and the shaft it's mounted on are threaded, so that when the pulley changes it's direction of rotation, it threads up the drive shaft a short distance to go into the spin cycle or down the drive shaft a short distance to go into the agitate cycle.

Most important is to see if the motor is turning in both cycles. If not, it's prolly your reversing relay.
