Valiant Boiler Switch

Hi there,

I've recently had trouble with my valiant boiler. The radiators are hot but no hot water is supplied through the taps/shower.

I've had a plumber come and look at this and he has diagnosed a faulty switch. He's charging me £120 to replace this switch. Is this reasonable?

Thanks for any advice. I am clueless when it comes to boilers so would just like some advice and reassurance.

I'm not entirely sure. But can switches be this expensive? I'm guessing its a switch that allows hot water to switch from the rads to the taps since we have heating but no hot water through the taps/showers. I'm not sure.

Of course you have not told us which of the many models of Vaillant you have!

It could well be the diverter valve and if its an 824 then that price sounds very cheap indeed.

If its only a "switch" then that may be a little expensive.

Why dont you find out what this switch really is and then we can give you proper advice.

how can you ask the question (is the price reasonable) if you don,t know which part he is quoting for.

Maybe you should employ a heating engineer who is CORGI reg, not a plumber, he could then tell you exactly the part required

what about the old thermocompact servo switch tony?

120 would be about right for that I would have said

then again I am talking outta school as we dont know which switch it is

Thanks for all your comments guys.

I've found out the part to be replaced is an Aqua Sensor. Is £120 reasonable for fitting and cost of part?

The aqua sensor is a small turbine which is rotated by water flow. The moving part contains a magnet which induces a voltage into a static coil and the PCB detects this to indicate a demand for DHW.

We always get them going by cleaning after they have become clogged with a little dirt and thats a standard diagnostic charge of £84.

If it really needed changing then they are probably about £23.
