I have Norton and Google pop-up blockers running, but some still seem to get through. All my settings are correct so maybe I need an extra one. Plus the sites (guitar ones) seem to put malware on my computer.

Which do you recommend?

XP Pro (Media Center Edition). Internet Explorer 6.

OK. If you don't have XP SP2 yet, then you could improve the ability of IE6 to block pop-ups - it's quite effective, but there is still some virulent adware that will use scurrulous methods to ram adverts down your throat.

I recommend going through a process of cleaning up the PC, viz:

1. Delete all temporary files (empty Temp folders) in Safe Mode.
2. Use Internet Options to delete Temporary Internet Files.
3. Reset IE Security Level settings to the default.
4. Reset IE Advanced settings to the default set.
5. Remove all Downloaded Program Files (valid ones will reload later).
6. Check and remove undesirable sites from your list of allowed sites in IE.
7. Install and run LavaSoft "Ad-Aware".
8. Install and run "Spybot Search and Destroy".

See how the machine behaves after all that lot, and post back here if you still have problems.

Thanks, yeah I do have SP2. I do all of those things that you said as standard.

It's the sites, rather than my computer, I think!

I thought there might be a little standalone program.

OK. Do you have the IE pop-up blocker enabled?

If all else fails, use Firefox. In fact, use Firefox anyway - you won't regret it!

I make it a firm policy not to predict what the fault will be until after it's found, mainly on the grounds that (a) I could be wrong, and (b) the prediction is pointless and a distraction.

If you have pop-ups being blocked, and you've eliminated all of the things in the list I gave, then are still more cleanup activities to do. If you post an example of a site that you visit that causes the problem then I'll check what that site is doing.

notb665, I have internet explorer 6, WinXP professional, Norton internet security package, ad blocker, popups blocked by IE AND norton. (Also, 3 firewalls on router, winXP and Norton  )

However, IMAGESHACK popups now get through every time. Maybe i should upgrade to norton 2006. I have got norton 2004, but it updates itself, so i thought it should be as good as?

You could try Hijack this.

It's a good tool, but geared towards the intermediate to advanced fiddler, so take care when using.
