blackresidue on washer

what is the black residue on the washer when you replace. i dont like the idea of polluted water.

molasses icon_question.gif..that`d be a faucet washer, Al icon_wink.gif.........seriously, maybe it`s the washer deteriorating slightly and decomposing a tiny bit on it`s face icon_idea.gif our tap washers can do that sometimes.....otherwise haven`t a clue

the residue is like black ink. Ihave seen this on the flapper vlave in the toilet tank.
