Hello there icon_smile.gif
If your starting out at the moment i would recommend you buying some books to get used to certain parts of your course and one or two will illustrate tables of current carrying capacities and csa`s of conductors that should be used.
1)BS7671 (16th edition)
2)ON SITE GUIDE
3)GUIDANCE NOTE 3
4)ELECTRICIANS GUIDE TO THE BUILDING REGS
These were the four i bought and for me they are great to refer to.
I also bought most of Brian Scaddons books as i found them very easy to follow.
Good luck icon_razz.gif

To work out the CSA of a cable is the same as working out the CSA of a circle , PiR²
Festa, can you still get the electricians guide to the building regs? I had a look for it not so long back for a mate but couldn't find it for sale. (Lucky I already have my copy).

csa = pieR2

and

resistance = (17.2(micro) ohms (this is given resistivity for copper) x Length of cable) / cross sectional area
