We got a leak fixed under the floor. It was a pipe leading to a radiator. We were told that the leak might be a cause for hearing a constant filling of the water tank in the attic. However the noise is not gone now. It is actually worse. What does this mean? Have no idea..Also there are cold spots on the radiators

Sounds like you`ve a sludge problem, and pumping over to the f/e tank. Try turning your pump speed down and see if the noise in the loft stops. You need to flush your system out and put some inhibitor in afterwards.

Does this only happen when your heating is on

May be a faulty ball-cock valve. Is there water running out of the overflow pipe from the cistern?

No, it also keeps running when the heating is off!?? The system was emptied when the pipe was fixed. Could it still be filling? How long does it take to fill the heating system again?

If it is happening when your heating is off you can rule out pumping over.

Shouldn't take that long to refill the system, your plumber would have filled it before he left.

I reckon you need your ball-cock fixed - it may just be a washer or the lever arm may need adjusting if the valve shutoff level is above the overflow .

Check outside to see if water is coming from the overflow.

It would be quite a noticeable leak for your valve to be constantly opening so I don't think it's that.

Let us know how you're getting on.

We found another leak close to the other leak found yesterday in a pipe going to the radiator and my husband and the plumber also figured out that the coil in the hot cylinder is broken allowing water from the large tank in the attic to run into the heating system, hence the constant filling of the tank in the attic.

We had a problem last year with hot water coming from the overflow. We had a plumber looking at it, who installed a non return valve and an expansion tank. We now realise that as the main water tank level is higher than the water level in the smaller tank for the heating system, water was being forced through the coil and up into the small tank and out through the overflow. We are also getting a new hot water cylinder now and hope for the best as we seem to have gunbarrel pipes and sludge in system. Plumber thinks flushing with chemicals might do more harm than good, but will add a corrosion inhibitor.
