Colouring quarry tiles

I wish to colour half the tiles in a quarry tiled floor to create a terracotta/black chequerboard pattern. what can I use to colour the plain quarries black?

if they are not already glazed (shiny) you can use low fire ceramic glaze which you will need to get from a ceramic/art supply-you will also need to ask them about firing them for you once you have put on the glaze

They're not glazed but they are in situ!

we used quarry tiles as a base for an open fire place but used black lead
polish to change the colour to black hope this is of use
