My windows are old aluminium ones and I get really bad condensation in the winter. If I had them replaced with new should I expect to eliminate it, or would it still occur albeit hopefully not as badly?

Its should pretty much be eliminated but it still depends on your property and how well it is insulated/ventilated and how you live it in it.

In most cases it can actually make it worse, with newer, better windows that are thermally efficient and 99.99% draught free you are eliminating maybe the last bit of free flowing air you've got therefor cutting down ventilation.

If your old ali windows aren't thermally broken and the condensation is forming on the ali surface then pvc windows will probably cure it as its a better thermal insulator, better still are 'A' rated pvc frames.

If your condensation is on your walls, in the corners of rooms, behind wardrobes, beds then you have a ventilation problem and will not be cured by more efficient windows

I have a mixture of both. The condensation forms on the frame and the window. I do have some of that 'black nasty' in a few corners here & there but it's not too drastic. How can I address ventilation?

some condensation problems it should be noted are also caused by bad installation.
