conveyor belt and plane answered at last ??

thanks for the link it is conspiring against me as u tube freezes up at 11 seconds on any link lol

try placing 2 or 3 bottles or cans on a supermarket belt a few inches apart

now because off fluid dynamics they will collect a bit off energy but move very little as the only rolling resistance is the contents starting to rotate

and on the same token when you stop the belt the energy the contents amass will move the can a short distance
now whilst there is no fluid involved on a plane i think the energy transference[kinetic energy ]will be minimum in a similar amount as the air resistance will soon overcome the rolling friction off the bearings and tyre deflection

think off the rails under a train as a conveyor belt so if a train is traveling at 60mph imagine instead the rails are travelling backward at 60mph

now without any wind resistance the train on level track will travel around 10 miles before the friction overcome momentum

now in the instance off a plane you would have to apply the brakes to transfer enough energy to accelerate the plane on the belt in the same way you need to apply the brakes to stop the train "rolling " the wrong way

my take on it, is a clever question.... too clever to be solved... it's a couple of scientific principles, whic are fact, however, the runway matching the speed of the wheels is a hypothetical impossibility, and therefore fuels this debate...

the wheels would reach impossible speeds therefore the questions fails...

It's a bit like this

Your right Sombrero, a lot of thought has gone into the replies, and that is where the problems lies, too much thought when none is needed.

It's a simple so damn obvious, it can't be true.

The belt is travelling at 10miles per hour, and the plane is travelling at 10mph, so after 1hour the distance is 20miles. :rolleyes:

the wheels on the conveyor belt have done the full distance, or in other words twice as far as the belt has travelled and twice as far as the plane has travelled.

Therefore the wheels were travelling twice as fast as the belt which should be the same speed as the wheels.

Now whilst you could go for a history load of scientific know how and whatever else comes to mind.

The simple fact is, the only time the plane wheels can match the conveyor speed is when both are stationary.

Well DIA what do you think if we change the question a little bit????


Lets say we have the same scenario with the conveyor etc but substitute the plane for a BG salesman in one of the flying vans.

Above them there's a pensioner with a boiler that only needs a new thermocouple to keep going for another ten years.

Can the salesman take off? :mrgreen:
 
he wouldn't want too, the sales shark will be waiting round the corner while the engineer tells the old couple the boiler is immediately dangerous, and the spares are not available. :rolleyes:
 
Should have gone to Aria, you'd have got a much higher spec machine for the same money.
 
Ah, still not decided, so all is not lost.

But, as I said on Hardware, the Lenovo comes out well. It's got a good reliability record, it's a best buy in the price bracket, it's well constructed and got lots of kit for the price.

But I'm still looking, to see what else there is. Never say never!
 
Not overly happy with lenovo keyboards, they feel too "cheap" and "clicky" if you catch my drift.
 
The first one I linked to are all gone, HP are good machines had the HP Pavillian laptop for over 12 years and still use it every day.
