Well putting aside the EU gump, I don't mind.

People would still be using 100w bulbs if not for government heavy handedness, sometimes they can get things right.

The tw*ts of Europe have come up with another mind blowing ridiculous idea. As from 1st September, you will not be able to buy a vacuum cleaner over 1600 watts. So if you need one, you had better hurry up.

The idea is to save energy, so far better to use a less powerful one for longer

Nil desperandum. They tried to ban incandescent light bulbs too. You can still buy them. France (and others) will no doubt ignore this ruling, so perhaps we could buy the vacuum cleaners we want from them.

And on a more positive note, I predict either our independence from the EU (or the total collapse of the EU) within a few years. Future historians will view it as a failed experiment. Unfortunately, before either of these scenarios come about, much further damage will have been done to this country.

I love 100w bulbs. Better than the orange rubbish that takes five minutes to warm up before you can see anything.

I agree. It's all about freedom of choice. If I want to use a 100W lamp, or a 2000W vacuum cleaner for that matter, I should be allowed to do so. It is I who would be paying for the electricity I use.

As others have pointed out, the nett result will be that people will spend longer vacuuming using their lower-powered units and thus using the same amount of electricity (or use two 60W lamps instead of one 100W).

At the same time, China and others will continue to burn coal to produce electricity.

What are our out-of-touch bureaucrats in Brussels hoping to achieve?

That's what gets me. It always seems like Britain that has to change for the sake of the planet, whilst the rest of the planet couldn't give a toss.

Still, I suppose in a few years when Britain becomes the equivalent of a third world country, we probably will not have electricity anymore so all our electrical goods will be obsolete.

And this is why our society is doomed. TPTB try to do something to curb consumption even a little , and save us a bit of money in the process , and people are up in arms with twaddle about having the choice to use as much power as possible and feck everyone else. Honestly is anyone's life really going to be that much worse just because they have to use a few hundred watts of power less to Hoover their houses?
The only thing I will say against these regs is that they are going to be widened to include things like electric heaters and hair dryers which is more self defeating that a vacuum . Electric heaters are pretty much 100% efficient as it is so a lower power one would be used for longer unlike a lower power vacuum where the difference in performance would be negligible .

Our society is doomed for lots of reasons but using a vac over 1600w isn't one of them.

Lets suggest that all MPs must use cars under 1.2Ltrs, that would save some fuel.

No but it shows the masses are unwilling to accept piddling little changes to thir lifestyles so how would they react to any major changes that are needed in the long term.

A democratic society should include freedom of choice. Taxing 4x4's, making us use gloomy energy-saving bulbs, low-wattage vacs and all the other green nonsense is gradually turning us into a society not unlike the (old) eastern block countries.

Before long, companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, for example, will be making their products just for export to the US and far East; we won't be allowed to buy their products.

We are at the thin end of a very long wedge.

All these blokes discussing the performance of vacuum cleaners is a good giggle.

When buying a vac there's only one question I have, what it weighs, can't have the wife struggling when cleaning the stairs.

Quite right.

I reckon that in a couple of decades, or maybe three, we will be getting used to either rationing of electricity or a complete turn-off, and the reason is that the greenies insistence on our using windmills alone is beginning to pay off.

I might well be in my box by then, but I do feel sorry for my first wife.

On the other hand, we may well have invested in a generator by then.

Pssst - I know a man, that has a friend that can still get 1600w hoovers. You know what I mean Squire - hush hush, no questions asked :D
