A friend of ours, who has recently divorced and has very little cash coming in has just told us that her 19-year old son is in debt to a drug dealer to the tune of £500. We have cash to bail her out, but it's unlikely either she or he will ever be able to repay the debt.

We've helped them out before, with no effort of them ever trying to return any cash even though she has a job and they both smoke.

At what point does one draw the line????

Really difficult question. Only you can answer it.

It can take a very long time to realise that some people will take and take and expect you to keep giving. You can't change them and you never really help them. Best thing to do is tell em to fook off.

You're right. I know I've answered my own question but, like the junkie, this will have to be the last time

£500??

Highly unlikely unless he is dealing himself or he has a good job and it's coke

Possibly. Who knows but what would you do if it were a close family friend who's up the creek and trying to paddle, albeit a pretty poor paddle?

"That's quite a problem you've got there. What do you plan to do about that problem of yours?"

I wouldn't be paying them cash to pass on to a criminal that's for sure. I would be asking a few more questions (i.e.what drugs he is taking and how he came to run up a £500 bill)

However, I don't know the full position as regards your friendship and past experiences so can only say what I would do.

pay it last time, this time, next time.

Whoever he claims to owe the money to will have no reason to stop running up debts, since he has a good fairy to pay them.
