Hi Guys,

Long time forum lurker here, I have been browsing the forum for tips, how to’s and guides on and offer the past 5 years. I am an IT techie by trade and with the power of “I can do that” have managed to so far successfully renovate 2 houses over that browsing period. I used to be a chippie back in the day but only for a year whilst looking for my first IT job, so could only really use a hammer and drill previous to buying my first house with intention to fully renovating it.

Deep down, I enjoy DIY (is this normal?) and have amassed a great tool collection.

Most jobs I have managed to do myself aside from the dark art of plastering, electrics and the heating/boiler. Don’t get me wrong, I can change a light switch or a socket but anything north of that I will leave it to the pros.

Anyway, this weekends task is to wire up this fancy new Hive 2 CH and HW system. Everywhere I read states “yeah its easy” or “done that in 10 minutes and had time to walk the dog”. This I don’t doubt but I am determined with the “I can learn how to do that”.

I have stared at instructions for hours and simply put I can’t get my head around it/have the confidence to know if I am right. I need your help and I hope someone will take the time to aid.

So I have a Hive 2 HW and CH system. It is to replace a Honeywell T45 (they seem to go under all sorts of names ST699 seems very common(?!)) programmer located next to the boiler, a thermostat located in the hallway, and an ageing 20 year old ideal classic boiler located in the utility room with the programmer. This programmer controls both the HW and CH.

Removing the facia, this I what I have

Now browsing the Programmers manual it looks like I have a W-Plan setup? (page3&4)
https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&r...sg=AFQjCNEuHcqmd22lX5m5tMZGQf7NFwF1hA&cad=rja

Handy shot of W plan for reference

Tank area with pump and what look like 2 diverter valves(?)

Said Thermostat in hallway

Now, here is the install guide for the hive 2:
https://www.hivehome.com/attachment/37/download/Thermostat_Install_Guide.pdf

Given that I wish to wire the programmer to control the HW and CH I’m going to take a punt and say I need to wire in Dual channel?

Now rather that bore you with my theories and make you think what the hell is this guy on about, ill cut to the chase, below is a numbered wire version of what I currently have (1,2,3,4,5,6,7), would one of you be so kind to simply state which of my numbered wires go to the corresponding terminals on the Hive programmer (N,L,1,2,3,4) along with any wires that need removing?

Thus far I am confident the two live link wires will go in the bin hence the lack of numbering.

Finally, is there anything I need to do with the existing TS located in the hallway?

Thanks for your time.

If you can't read a basic wiring diagram then you really shouldn't be messing with it as it will be an expensive mistake when it goes wrong. Give a Pro a call, it'll be cheaper in the long run.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Perhaps I came across a little too newbie - i'm 95% certain what goes where, I just want someone to confirm it. If we all called pros out everytime then DIY would be non existent.

Save this and just put it on every nest/hive thread going.

Wonder what would happen if someone was electrocuted or burnt their house down and your advice was blamed.
Also would electricians answer these questions and do themselves out of work?
It's a job for someone who knows what they are doing it's not a DIY job at all.
Why do you think there are several new threads daily on here on the subject?
Keep up the good work Jon ;)

Pop up what you think goes where and it can be confirmed :)

(ST699) Wire Number – Hive2
(L) 7 --------------- L
(N) 4,5+6 --------- N
(3) 3 --------------- 4
(4)
(5)
(6) 2 ----------------3
(7)
(8) 1-----------------1 or cap it off?

Hive terminal 2 remains empty. What do I do with the stat?

Don't worry, I wont hold you to if my house burns down ;)

Shambolic - The idea of community forums is for people to help each other out. I myself personally have helped thousands of people on numerous forums and wrote dozens of detailed articles, in my field, which naturally no doubt would have done my business out of work. I understand the risk of DIY and am prepared to take the risk hence why I, and many other users are here and the forum exists.

I don't mean to sound like a cock in this reply, but anyway.
Have you read the instruction manual for the Hive? The Hive manual is very well written and covers S plan heating and what to do with the stat.

No offence, but from experience, reading that line sounded alarm bells in my head. The more I read you post, the louder the alarm bells were ringing.

Now browsing the Programmers manual it looks like I have a W-Plan setup?
How did you come to that conclusion when the wiring you have is very different?

Tank area with pump and what look like 2 diverter valves(?)
How would valves with only 2 pipes divert?
Where on the w plan diagram does it show 2 valves?

is there anything I need to do with the existing TS located in the hallway?
It tells you in the instruction manual. You even provided a link to it!

I and I'm sure others, will be more than happy to provide assistance, and help you learn. Providing you look at and follow through the S plan wiring diagram, look at the Hive wiring diagram and read the installation manual in full, and look carefully at how your programmer is wired.

If you do all of these things there is no reason why you won't be able to come back to us with your wiring numbers list and what you intend to do with the old stat and its wiring, so we can confirm that you are correct. Do not keep guessing the wiring. Your wiring guesses up to this point are still wrong. Incorrect wiring can easily damage the Hive.

If you can not be bothered to try to do that, then go away, and as others have said, please call in a Hive installer or an electrician who knows the Hive system. The members here offering advice are doing so in their own free time and are not getting paid, they expect you to put in some effort too. Randomly guessing electrical wiring and getting it wrong can easily cause fire, injury or death. [/RANT]

I have a Honeywell ST699 programmer with Y Plan system. I would like to clarify the wiring arrangements for each terminal on the Hive receiver. Advice would be appreciated please. On my arrangement the Live feed to the programmer is linked to Commons on Heating and HW.

The terminals are marked the same on both the Hive and ST. Simply connect the old heating NO to the Hive heating NO and the same with the hot water NC and NO. There are no COM terminals on the Hive as those connections are already made inside the Hive. N to N and L to L.

If you have an existing room thermostat, you will then need to find where it is wired back to, usually a junction box where the 3 port valve is. The old thermostat cable needs to be disconnected and a wire link fitted between where the live to the stat was and where the switched live from the stat was. To help you find the right cable, it will be the only one connected to the white wire on the 3 port valve.

Thank you - very helpful. Just to be clear, there is a red wire which leads to the Hot Water COM terminal (see photo - which must be permanently live as there is also a link to that terminal from the Heating COM terminal which is in turn is linked to the Live terminal). What do I do with this wire please?

Great thanks - on the Thermostat I guess an option is to link the relevant wires at the T/Stat

Yes, but that is my least preferred option, you could also just set the old one to maximum, but that's just really lazy!

Hi Echo,

I have just found your posts while preparing to install a new hive. I have a baxi 30HE Combi, HRFS1 wireless stat (also known as a t50 I think).

The HRFS1 has: SLon SLoff Netural and Earth (earth left coiled up)

From the above I connect the SLon and SLoff to the same on the Hive terminals (3 and 2).

Neutral to Neutral

Then link out Live and Com to match HRFS1?

Is this correct or am I missing something :?:
