I've got a building being refurbished. We have a 40 ft roof that we need to cut and put on. At the mid point (ish) of the rafter we will be putting steel perlins in to support the load.
At the two gable ends we have already placed the padstones (a little lower than we think we need) and have cut our template rafters.
Now, we can cut the whole roof and birds mouth where the steels (with timber plate ontop) will sit and hold the roof up. Then slide the steels underneath and cut the vertical posts holding these steels and then weld in place.
Or should we put the steels in and then put the rafters ontop ?
Our problem is that we have no accurate way of ensuring these steels follow the natural flow of the roof line (building) as it does dip down, by about 1" over the 40 ft. So, by doing steels second, we can crank the steels up to the underside of the rafters and then shuffle the top plate that the bottom of the rafters sit on in an out a little, as the wall does wobble a little.
