Looking at two long lintels for my extension....I gather that stainless is the way to go, as we live a stone's throw from the sea, but the cost difference is huge. Is there nothing I could coat standard steel cavity wall lintels with to protect them instead?
If you are in an exposed coastal position it is more important to make sure you install a cavity tray (with stop ends) over the lintels to keep the saltwater spray away from the metal, even if galvanised. I would also give the top and ends of the lintel, anything that will be in contact with the outer leaf of the wall a couple of coats of bitumimous paint. If any parts of the underside of the lintel outer lip are exposed, such as above the window head, make sure they are well painted.
