Qatar world cup

During the opening ceremony this afternoon, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the emir of Qatar, said: "From Qatar, from the Arab world, I welcome everyone to the World Cup 2022."

"How lovely it is that people can put aside what divides them to celebrate their diversity and what brings them together."

What a moving gesture from Sheikh. It makes me want to bend my knee.

Well I guess then you approve of not showing respect for oppressed people?

Fifa have said they also don't want 'one love' armbands to be worn...

Do you agree with that?

I'm proud that amongst others England and Wales are taking that stance...

No doubt there will be a meaningless 'fine', but personally I would want countries who defy Fifa to be kicked out of the tournament...

And that will shine a light on the corrupt/racist organisation that Fifa is, and then maybe the world's biggest sport can be reformed!

I was looking forward to seeing coverage of the opening ceremony before the game, so it was disappointing to be treated to a moral lecture on LBGTQ rights in Qatar by St. Lineker and his three stooges. Where was all this outrage when Russia held the tournament in '18 - a country filled with human rights abuse; or Brazil, where political corruption is rife, as much as the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest and the oppression of native people living there; or South Africa...the list goes on. It was even commented that it was the most corrupt sporting event in history, an unusual claim considering the 1936 Berlin Olympics. FFS!
Obviously the opening game was a bust - anyone know why the first goal was disallowed? Offside my eye. Qatar were so bad i reckon Hartlepool would've dealt with them easily. The Dutch will have an extra training session to look forward to.

So England have a chance to kick-off this tournament with some football to show the fuzzies how it's done. And all Captain Kane can worry about is getting booked for wearing a colourful armband. Just put the ball in the net, mate, and send that lot back to the Mad Mullahs with tales of English grit and greatness in a foreign land, just like the Good Old Days.

Wokeland v Iran, I don't quite know which one I want to loose the most.

I'll be wanting The US & Wales to beat England
:eek::eek:
Heresy!

On the other hand...will the English rugby team face such pressure to highlight these issues at their world cup next year? Just askin'...

I thought the Scots supported anyone but England?
but i'm no scottish, and up until recently I would have been watching every game waving my little St Georges flag. But this over politicising the game has well and truly pished me off, hope they get knocked out in the group stage.

I wish everyone would just be honest and say 'it's all about the money!!!'

All this guff from organisations, teams, pundits etc about 'we can challenge their views from within' blah blah blah.

Yeah RIGHT, literally lol. We all know the world cup will come and go in Qatar and nothing will change ;)

It's on things like this where the human race KNOWS what's going on, but we come out with various types of guff to try and excuse what's going on, or indeed our own actions if we're involved in said contentious thing.

Take Berkham. Let's just be honest. These people often prostitute themselves to the highest bidder. They need to keep the cash rolling in and/or they're greedy.

p.s. I'm Scottish, well 1/2 Scottish ;) and I always want England to do well if Scotland's not in whatever tournament/event.
