I won't bore anyone with the acoustics, but unless you're sitting within the distance between the speakers from the screen (ie: a metre away from a metre wide screen, assuming speakers are at the extremities) you'll not get a proper stereo image.
You'll get summation if you're sat centrally (the left and right will combine to give you between 3 and 6dB more volume than one speaker alone) but you won't really notice where it's coming from
