Next question: Can I then use masonry paint on it, or will that prevent it...

I need to make some repairs to the render of the external walls of my 1930's bungalow.
Repairs especially need to be made where double glazing was installed 3 years ago. I think the top coat is snowcrete(?) and the walls are concrete (with bits of flint and brick). I may be wrong...

I've got some old steps in my garden that I want to renovate. I'd like to have concrete steps, then possibly lay slabs on top later. I'm not entirely sure what the old steps are made from, it looks like lots of concrete(?) tiles or roof tiles cemented together like a big sandwich...
Pipes are not really bedded on anything, there is some hardcore etc in the hole at the moment. I know this probably sounds stupid to you, but when I put shingle in the hole, how much do I put in?
