Natural slate tiles in fireplace - which adhesive?

I've taken out an old 1930's fireplace and now want to build a simple hearth to stand a multifuel freestanding stove. I'm planning to use 30 x 30cm natural stale tiles with grey grout, but what is the best adhesive to lay the tiles onto the exisitng concrete base? Could I use a simple sand...

Using MDF to mount back panel on gas fire installation

A bit of advice please.... I'm replacing an old 1960's fire place with a new one with gas fire (chimney class 1). I'm using a Valor SoloPro hearth and back panel which is a lightweight granite design (built around a metal frame). The back panel needs to be spaced off the wall by 10mm to...

Routing of vent from combi boiler

Thanks for the replies. I'll have another look at the kitchen location at the weekend to check out the boundary situation. If it ends up in the bathroom then it will go in the old airing cupboard currently occupied by the hot water cylinder.

Routing of vent from combi boiler

My mate has a small terraced house and wants to install a new combi boiler. Currently no gas boiler exists and the hot water is via an immersion heater. Being a terraced house the location of the boiler is going to be limited, and the ideal position from what I can see is in the small kitchen...

    led spot bulbs

You can get LED MR16's. However as some posters have pointed out they are not as bright, more focused beam, a colder blueish tinge to the light, and pretty expensive compared to standard ones at the moment. Depending on how many you have installed in the room I would start by replacing a...

PVA plyboard before laying vinyl floor?

I've just laid some 6mm ply on my bathroom floor ready for either adhesive tiles a or vinyl floor. Should I seal the plyboard before laying the floor (maybe with PVA, varnish, paint)? Would sealing the floor help the tiles stick? Thanks

    electric shower

Worth checking the internal filter inside the shower (isolate electrically first & shut off the water to the shower!). I found a bit of ptfe tape and swarf had come up the pipes after first installation and blocked the plastic filter inside the shower. Simple fix.

Fuse rating for gas hob ignition

I'll put a 3amp in then. What I can't understand is that they have fitted a 13amp fuse, but the cable is only 0.75mmsq 3 core to the hob. Its a major domestic appliance company so you'd expect the hob to be supplied with the correct moulded plug and fuse?

Fuse rating for gas hob ignition

I have got a new gas hob that i'm going to fit (and get it connected by a Corgi plumber), but whilst looking at it ready for cutting a hole in the worktop I noticed that the 3 pin pre-wired socket has a 13Amp fuse fitted. I have looked through the documentation and it does not state the VA or...

    Small tin of black gloss

Anyone know if you can get tester size pots of black gloss paint. Do any of the big sheds do them? I only need to paint a very small area of wood to match the existing black gloss tiling in a bathroom, but all the black gloss paint tins seem to be 500ml or bigger.

    Aquapanel

I think the aquapanel screws are designed to screw through the board without pre-drilling, and will counter sink themselves flush as they have a special cutting head. Expensive though, but saves time when screwing onto batons or stud wall. I've used drywall screws, but you have to drill the...

    Protecting outside gas supply pipe

The side of my end terrrace house has a narrow alleyway that allows vehicle and pedestrian access to the back of the terrace where people have garages, so I was thinking that it would be best to protect the pipe. There has been a couple of times where people have clipped the corner of the...

    Protecting outside gas supply pipe

Hi Everyone A plumber has told me that when my new boiler is fitted the gas supply will be run along the side of the house. I guess this will be done in copper pipe, but should some sort of metal casing or channel protect it? I'm worried that it could be prone to vandalism or accidental...
