    chimneys

Thanks for the tips and advice. I think we will look into having the rest of the chimney taken out. Just worried how expensive it will be! Do I need to contact the council or structural engineer? or will a builder just be able to take it out without either? Just asking because I'm in...

    chimneys

I'm thinking more in terms of getting it supported, and a structural engineer checking whether it does need extra support - though i'm wondering if it would be easier to just take the rest of it out. Saying that the roof would also need 're-filling' if we take it out. Would it be really...

    chimneys

Judging by the lack of replies since i posted the photos i'm guessing my thread is useless even with the pics! We went into the attic today with a stronger light and what we can see is this: The chimney breast in the attic is 'sat' on 2 bricks. At the back of the 2 bricks is a beam...

    chimneys

ok, pics done and it looks even more frightening to me! i don't go up into the attic! v. scary to see a power cable running under it, apparently the wooden beam is towards the back of the chimney but hasn't shown up on the camera! the chimney in the attic you will have to turn your head to see...

    chimneys

its only a small(ish) chimney if that makes a difference. its not the main chimney. according to our survey it supports just one chimney pot. but i'm guessing a wooden beam still isn't sufficient for that  (OMG!) just dug survey out and exact wording is 'The chimney breast in the...

    chimneys

we popped around to the neighbours house and they are not knocking down the chimney (the noise I could hear was them doing something else -was just me jumping to conclusions). Doesn't change the fact ours isn't supported though, which i wouldn't have really thought of if i hadn't heard them...

    chimneys

ok, John D, when you say wall brackets on the upper part of the chimney, do you mean they will be somewhere at the side of the chimney breast in the attic or underneath the chimney in the attic. Just sent my boyfriend up into the attic to have a look under the chimney between chimney and...

    chimneys

OMG! really?! I thought i was just being a paranoid woman! So any work a neighbour does on a chimney breast has an effect on the house next door? If ours is reinforced, would them taking their chimney out their side still have an effect on ours? Thanks for the reply!

obviously i'm talking about the chimney breast being knocked out here, though i am worried about the chimney structure above.

    chimneys

ok, i'm hoping not to sound really stupid here, but here goes . . When we bought our house we were told that originally there would have been a chimney running through the kitchen up to the bathroom, however at some point in time it had been taken out from the 2 rooms, but remains in the...

    scaffolding

joe-90 we are having a company replace wall ties because 1. we are not DIY minded so therefore wouldn't know where to start to replace them ourselves. 2.Reason they are being replaced is because we have horizontal cracks that have been investigated by a surveyor who has said they are corroded.

    scaffolding

I'm using a company to replace corroded wall ties on my house. We have to arrange the scaffolding for them (they can arrange it apparently but will charge excessively to contact a scaffolding company). It is a terraced house so only 2 sides need work. I was just wondering how much to expect to...
