ColJack, you are absolutely right in your summation. I also think I have a polarity problem and that not all black wires are actually neutral.
by 3 core i mean red, black and earth in grey sleeve.

Is there an easy way to tell which is the mains pipe feeding the cold water tank other than working back from the tank itself. (which is very difficult in my house!)
I am wanting to install an electric shower on the mains riser, but there are about 6 copper pipes in the area that I want to...
there are only 3 wires going into the switch - a dual core and a single core cable.
the wall lights only switch on when the main light is on - if you switch the main light off, the wall lights switch off too.
Any ideas on where to look for the junction box. Will it be under the floorboards...
Its definitely not chipboard and pretty sure it not T&G so would be the other one.
The boards are narrow, maybe 4" wide with 1/4" gap between rows and run the entire length of the room.
The switch matches the rest of the house so think its original. The only thing that looks new is the wiring on the wall lights as its newer wire colours.
The single red wire is in common with a jumper to the other common. The black wires are both in the L1 position on each switch.
Pretty...
I need to lift some boards to locate some wiring and just wondered what the best way is and the tools to use.
The boards run the entire length of the room and do have a small gap between them.
Any thoughts or is it as easy as just going at it with a crow bar.
I would like not to have to...
I have just moved into a house and am changing all the switches and sockets. The lounge has 1 ceiling rose and 2 wall lights with a 2 gang switch. The wall lights don't look original as the cabling is newer then the rest. The house was built in '64 and all the cables are red/black with grey...
I tried turning the system on for a while and got a huge bubble in the cictern in loft. All the rads then filled OK.
I left it overnight to settle and turned eveything on the next day. The heating worked and water gets hot. At first I though it had not worked as there was a brown tint to the...
Im pretty sure nothing broke when opening and closing as there was no resistance in any gates or valves.
I think it is probably the manual valve suggestion but have no idea how to do this on this pump. I can bleed it with the large screw in the middle, but the only other thing I can find is a...
Right, I have managed to drain the system and do the work I needed to do and am now trying to refill the system.
The downstairs radiators fill correctly without problems, but the upstairs are not filling. I am guessing this is something to do with the pump not being on. Do I have to do anything...
I have searched but cannot find an answer anywhere, so either not searching properly or hasn't been asked before (doubtful) Anyway, sorry if this is a repeat.
I need help with my pump when re-filling my system.
I have a primatic system and have just drained the system to change 3 rads. All...
Ahhhh, I see - it all makes sense now!
The problem that ive got is that im replacing one radiator with a heated towel rail and it states that it requires additives. What would happen if I ignored this and fitted it anyway? Would it just need draining every year or fail completely?
What are my...
I recently bought a house and would like to change the radiators, but cannot put my finger on exactly what kind of system it is to be able to drain and refill it.
I have a potterton kingfisher MF RS 50 boiler downstairs and an emmersion tank upstairs. The only tank in the loft is the large cold...
