    Switched neutral for timer fan

Thanks for your assumptions that it's the guy who posts who's foolish and not the idiot who did the job in the first place! Or probably second place as it must have been changed by an earlier occupier. I shall change the wires round so that the live is switched as it should be. Fortunately...

    Switched neutral for timer fan

I am installing a timer fan and therefore need to wire it via a light rose with a switched live. However, the light in question (and the rest of the lights in the house for that matter) uses the neutral as the switch wire. Am I right to assume that I need to change this junction around so...

    Cylinder connections in right direction

Thanks for the additional ideas. Paul, I did notice on receiving the cylinder that the machining on the threads wasn't of the highest quality... On another note entirely...Kev, sadly this is no longer Mrs Thatcher's England, it is new Labour's, and they have all but ruined it!

    Cylinder connections in right direction

Much appreciated Tony. I would have liked to change it to a straight connector, as you say, but space and the position of the existing pipes (which connect to original 1" iron pipes!) makes it impossible, at least for me. Counting the turns is a great idea. Thanks again, Bob

    Cylinder connections in right direction

I am replacing the HW cylinder. The connections for the coil in and out are both 1" to 28mm elbow. My question is, how do I make these connections sufficietly tight whilst ensuring they ae pointing in exactly the right direction for the existing pipe? Are several wraps of PTFE tape...

Metal back boxes not quite flush

    Thank you, Flameport!

Metal back boxes not quite flush

Sorry this may sound a petty question but I'm getting paranoid about when the inspector calls! I've slightly overestimated the depth of some of my metal boxes and when the walls are skimmed (double layer of p/b) they will be around 4or 5 mm below flush level. Does this matter? Thanks, Bob

Old style earth ring and Part P inspection

Thanks again Matthew. Yes, it was the second "if" that I had in mind. Cheers, Bob

Old style earth ring and Part P inspection

Sounds about right Ban....I'm just trying to imagine what was going through his mind as he clipped off all the ends of the earth wire... Thanks Matthew, a good idea. The earth wire in the T&E cable IS connected to the CU, so I guess I could trace the relevant cable to ensure continuity from...

Old style earth ring and Part P inspection

Thanks for the confirmation Ban. When I said I was referring to the fact that although modern T&E is installed for the lighting circuit, the Earth is not connected to anything, just nipped off at each light, as Hairyben remarked, and a separate bare 6mm wire used as the earth. The logic...

Old style earth ring and Part P inspection

Thanks Matthew Yes, I agree, there are so many opinions that I thought I would get the inspector to tell me what he needs, but it rankles a bit if he's asking for what isn't required! The house was built in 1959 and has modern plastic coated cables, except that the earth wire in the T&E...

Old style earth ring and Part P inspection

I understood that we were under no obligation to change existing installations to meet current regs, but wonder how the following fits in: The council appointed inspector says that I cannot connect the earth wire from the new wiring in new en-suite (not a new circuit, just a JB from existing...

    Two layers of plasterboard

Thanks for the advice. The poor work did leave me confused, as the original walls in this house are a credit to whoever did them.....absolutely flat and true. Personally I find plastering extremely difficult and it's the only DIY job (well, and the gas pipe) I won't tackle. Most other stuff...

    Two layers of plasterboard

Thanks for the reply Richard. The truth is that I have had two plasterers doing different jobs for me previously, one very expensive, the other very reasonable, but neither have been anything like a million dollars, in fact the finish has always been disappointing. More like the lake district...

    Two layers of plasterboard

I am creating an en-suite in the main bedroom. The first layer of plasterboard is fixed to the studs with dry-lining screws. I would like to stick the second layer on so that I can dry finish it. Is it acceptable to use a "no-nails" type bonder from a tube and gun, rather than mess about...
