The manufacturer's plate is a good idea from their perspective: extra £ + the insides are protected, but I just made a 2" cover for the front of the top of mine as the worktop covered the innards.
Besides, as zipper is aware, I've got my 24yo washer working again so I don't need a new machine...
Tested capacitor in work and found it was faulty, paid £10 for one locally (cheaper online but delivery £ + time), fitted it and my 24 yo machine now washes and spins again !

I'm looking at a new washer and considering a Hotpoint such as the WML520P. However, at 850mm high its too big to fit under a kitchen worktop where the last one lived. I had to take the top of the last washer to reduce its height by 2cm. Is it likely I could do the same with a new Hotpoint...
Thanks very much for the speedy informative replies. Unfortunately, after taking the motor out of the bottom of the machine I couldn't find any brushes as I assume I have an induction motor (labelled motor type 20571034).

Machine fills OK and drains and drum can be spun freely by hand but drum will not rotate during wash or spin. Most posters seem to highlight worn brushes (mine have lasted 24 years). I can't readily source brushes on line of get info on how to replace them. Do I just unbolt the motor, drop it...
