Hello,

I just need some advice, I am removing a supporting wall from our mid-terrace 3 bedroom house.
I need to put a RSJ in and the span is 4800mm
It supports the joist for the 1st floor and nothing else

I want to put a 203x203x46 in but should I step it up to 254x254x46?

Thats the wall I will be removing

Thanks
Steveo

You don't need a structural engineer to do the calcs (or you don't round here), you can do them yourself if you like, then BC will have them checked before they accept them. If it's just a beam holding up a floor the calculations are quite straightforward.

calculations are quite straightforward

And padstones, slender wall and foundation loading calcs?

Also the correct assessing of the beam load is essential. It's not just the beam calculation.

To the left of the beam the joist are 2"X 8" lenght=2000mm and to the right is 2"X 8" lenght= 3200mm and the lengh of the beam required is 4800mm with no walls above just 12 joists

If I had SE's calculations I wouldn't ask on here for the information

I will go to a SE but I thought I would ask on here so I could start getting prices on materials.

The foundations I thing would be ok but as am not a SE then what the hell would I know.

Get a price for your 203x203 column then, and know that you won't pay any more than that.

203x203x46 is way over the top. A 152x152x23UC would be plenty, or a 203x102x23UB.

There's a web site which will do all the calcs you need for £29 and email you a document, have a google. Give a copy of their report to building control (who will have them checked anyway) and another to somebody who sells long lumps of steel and they will give you a price. If the foundations need considering then that will be done with a pick and shovel and not a pencil and paper.
