    Box in a purlin

It can float and still offer support in the situation it’s been used for.

They were part way through the work. M16 8.8 high tensile bolts with 18mm holes drilled. Thanks for the reply. I’ll look into doing that.

    Box in a purlin

Hello We’ve had a purlin supported with a new timber. As it’s bolted on it looks a mess with 8 bolts. Can we box it in (plasterboard and plaster or some other means) or will it cause issues with breathability? It’s on the inside of the house and the loft is converted.

    Split Purlin

Both the joiner and roofer said ply but we decided we wanted a report with recommendations and actions to keep for when we sell and not open to questioning/increased risk of buyer pulling out. The structural engineer did say it’s 50/50, might never fully go but got to consider how it happened...

    Split Purlin

35 years experience, report done for free (a work colleague) and He’s not doing the work. My joiner is. ,) Reasoning was a surveyor will pick up on that so it’s worth spending £60 on materials and £100 fitting it to save pain later on.

    Split Purlin

So, when I posted this I'd already asked a structural engineer to come have a look. Supplementing the purlin is recommended. So, now I need to get a 250x75mm lump of 4m long wood up into the loft. Having some other roof work done that requires scaffolding so I'm hoping I can get it up that way...

    Purlin Clear Span

Hello Following on from my last question about a split purlin I did some digging on regulations. The length of the purlin is 4m. The size of the purlin is 270mm x 70mm. Looking at the tables this isn’t sufficient? In fact nothing seems to allow a clear span of 4m. House is mid terrace built in...

    Split Purlin

Thanks Does it need to be the full length of the purlin or just in the area where the split is? Edit: I just reread and get the 600mm

    Split Purlin

Hi Could anyone advise on best options for fixing this please? House built in late 1800s but loft converted maybe 30 years ago. The purlin is roughly 15ft long and this split is about 6ft away from one of the ends. Don't really want to replace the whole thing but looking at options. Thanks Dan

    After Extra Insulation

Thanks for your reply. I will empty the loft, remove the boards, let them put the insulation in then refit the boards.

    After Extra Insulation

Hi I've had a look around and there are plenty of threads about boarding and insulation etc but I'm trying to get a definitive answer. The situation at the moment is that our loft is boarded out (not screwed down) and we have boxes, suitcases etc stored up there. Our local council is...
