First time working with MDF - advice on joining and cutting

Thanks for your input. Much appreciated. Looks like I'm going to go with left over laminate flooring that I'd forgotten about in the loft, but I guess it's a similar construction as MDF and she'll get a nice wood effect finish too.

First time working with MDF - advice on joining and cutting

Thanks for advice John...I'll give that a go in regards to the joining, as well as trying out the cuts when I get my hands on some scrap pieces. Cheers. Mark

First time working with MDF - advice on joining and cutting

Thanks for the reply. Correx is one I'll have to google as it's not something I've heard of before. [EDIT] After looking at it, I'd still prefer to have a go in MDF. Thanks anyway.

First time working with MDF - advice on joining and cutting

Hi all, I've offered to undertake a small project to build a stable for my daughters model horses to her design. I've looked at similar buildings on offer and they're all made with 9mm MDF. I can get the straight cuts done to size by the supplier of the material, but I will need to cut...

What size wood to straddle joists

Thanks again for the reply and sorry for the confusion. If you imagine, I have my joists running one way at 600mm centres, I was just thinking of running something like individual boards at say 3-400mm centres (depending on the width of board) in the opposite direction (across the joists)...

What size wood to straddle joists

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't thinking of completely boarding it as it in the sloping part of the roof. I was just thinking of putting cross-members (for want of a better word) across the original joists, at say 300mm centres, just so I have some support (kind of like a noughts and...

What size wood to straddle joists

Hi, I'm looking for some advice on wood sizing for straddling the joists in my loft space. My joists are at 600mm centres and are about 1.5" wide. I was looking at putting some wood running in the opposite direction at lower centres, basically for storage and ease of moving around...

Bathroom Downlighters and plastic panelled ceiling

Interesting comment John, I'll have a look at that this evening, or I'll see if the electrician can tell me who the manufacturer is and I'll check it out today. I suppose the only question is, is whether these plastic cladding panels are classed as flammable? Looks like this could get...

Bathroom Downlighters and plastic panelled ceiling

Thanks Chri5, I must have misread the item description, I'd read it has converting from larger lights (big hole) down to smaller lights. Just as a follow up, I spoke to the manufacturer of the panels last night and they said they've not had this problem before, but obviously it's not...

    Waste pipe problems in bathroom

Sorry mate, I work with computers, so I'm OK in my field. Just the AAAAAV thing and anti-syphon HepVo traps was over my head. I'm guessing this is to stop it "sucking" the water from the other U bends? (Leaving myself open to be laughed at there! ;) ). I just assumed that if the u bend was...

    Waste pipe problems in bathroom

Richard, thanks for taking the time to get back to me. To be honest some of the tech-speak was over my head, but I get the gist of what you're saying. To my knowledge he is a bona-fide tradesman (at least I hope so as he fit a combi boiler at the same time), so as the expert should have...

Bathroom Downlighters and plastic panelled ceiling

That's an alternative, but either way, it's new fittings which then the ceiling needs to be drilled out to accommodate them. Thanks for your input Chri5

    Waste pipe problems in bathroom

Hi, I had new bathroom and ensuite suites fitted last August and i've had problems with them ever since that I'm still waiting on the plumber to come out and look at, and I was hoping to get some advice as to whether it's something wrong or whether I'm seeing something that isn't there...

Bathroom Downlighters and plastic panelled ceiling

Separate plumber, electrician and tiler. The tiler fit the ceiling and to be fair I had no issues with the tiler at all, very professional. The electrician was well aware of the ceiling type being fit and even pre-drilled the plasterboard before the cladding was fit. The plumber was a...

Bathroom Downlighters and plastic panelled ceiling

No, it wasn't a special/foreigner and at nearly £700 to fit the lights (and two fans), I didn't think it was cheap either. I'm not sure about the building control notification (I didn't see anything along those lines), but I did get a certificate of works at the end of the job, albeit this...

Bathroom Downlighters and plastic panelled ceiling

Thanks for the replies gents, I appreciate your input. I may well get somebody else in to look at the issue and get another "expert" opinion on it. It's a bit of a "dilemma" as the electrician is the husband of the OH's friend, as well as the plumber (but that's a whole different story), so...

Bathroom Downlighters and plastic panelled ceiling

Hi all, I did a search on this and didn't find anything related, so hopefully it's not been posted before. Last year I had my bathrooms renovated and had plastic panelling fit to the ceiling (was artexed and OH wanted flush fitting downlights). Anyway, the downlights fitted are mains...
