    Eco 7 Immersion heater problems

I have an immersion heater for hot water on economy 7 with a separate supply for 'normal' and eco 7. A few days ago I realised I didn't have any hot water so the bottom element hadn't come on overnight. I checked the consumer unit and that circuit had tripped, so I turned it back on. It then...

    Cost of bevelled glass

I've recently accepted a quote for new upvc windows and a new porch on the front of my house (Two 3 sided bay windows, one 'normal' window for the upstairs boxroom, and a new porch and front door) in rosewood, all with clear glass for just under 5 grand. I meant to ask him how much more it...

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

I seem to have sorted it after an awful lot of faffing! I just bridged the 2 switch wires again and re-tested the wire at the ceiling and it was live (I musn't have had a good connection with them before). I gave up with the new dimmer switch and put the old one back on and lo and behold I...

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

Sorry, to clarify, as I've probably not made this very clear: At the switch, there are 2 red wires and an earth. One of these is live. Due to my difficulties, it was suggested to bridge these 2 wires and test the ceiling wires. When I bridge the two wires at the switch (one of which is live)...

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

One of the wires at the switch is live. But if I put the 2 wires at the switch into the same terminal on the dimmer switch as suggested to test, the ceiling wires do not become live. Mr. Tinker - I've had it set up like that but it won't play unfortunately.

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

I don't see how though, because I took the old light fitting down before the old ceiling came down and it was attched to the same cables dangling down now, there was no other wire as the previous ceiling light only had 3 terminals anyway. God stuff like this bloody annoys me, how hard can it...

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

Bridging the 2 wires at the switch doesn't make the ceiling live. This is doing my head in now. Looks like I'm spending another £50 for an electrician to sort it in 2 mins.

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

So live should be in C? Because it's in L1 at the minute because this is how the old one was.

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

Yes, the terminals are in different positions on new and old, so I connected them from the symbols. In the old switch live went to L1 and the other wire to C, which is what I've repeated, but now nothing works :(

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

Ok, I've swapped L to S and still nothing. I've just tested the red wires at the dimmer switch to double check them and live is connected to L1 (presume this is correct)? I tried to test the cables at the ceiling by turning the power back on and clicking the dimmer switch on and turning it...

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

I've come to do this today and it isn't working. At the dimmer switch, there are 3 wires - 2 red and an earth. I looked where the reds were connected on the old dimmer (one to L1 and the other to a wavey symbol) and connected them to the same points on the new switch and the earth to the...

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

So, just so I'm clear - leave switch wire connector on the light fitting empty, and connect live neutral earth as normal (this is all that was connected to the old light fitting) and detatch the earth from the backplate to the faceplate on the dimmer, or leave it connected to the backplate...

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

I've just had my living room totally replastered with a new ceiling and have now come to fit a new ceiling light and replace the old dimmer switch for this light and just wanted to check a couple of things out, as what was supposed to be totally straightforward seems not to be. I've got the...

    Fair price?

Ok. The guy that gave me the quote is a 'retired' plasterer, who still does the odd thing. I was given his number on recommendation. I'm going to get a couple of quotes in and see how they compare.

    Fair price?

I've just had a quote for some plastering work. I've just had my living room and dining room knocked through and taken all the walls down to bare brick. Both rooms were around 3.2x3.5m (now with no adjoining wall and an RSJ that needs boxing in). Been quoted just over a grand to dot and dab...

Dot and Dab vs Proper Render

but why? is there any proper downside other than it feeling cheap when you knock on the wall?

Dot and Dab vs Proper Render

but is it actually cheaper than rendering it?

Dot and Dab vs Proper Render

Bear with me, as I don't know very much about plastering (as is probably apparent!). I'm currently renovating my 1930s house and have just had the living room/dining room knocked through (RSJ installed). I've also just taken all of the original plaster off the walls to get re-done as it was in...

    Saniflo not working

Unfortunately, the house that I recently bought has a Saniflo fitted in the downstairs loo. I don't know much about these, other than they are an absolute pain and often go wrong (some of my sites at work have them fitted). Surprise surprise, mine has now gone wrong. In short, I flushed the...
