Ballast for 1/10th of cubic m of concrete?

Hi fellas, I'm concreting a small base of a fireplace. Just wondered how many bags of ballast I'd need for an area one tenth of a cubic metre? I already have cement so it's just the 25kg ballast bags I need. Cheers

Plastering over a thick artex ceiling

Ok, I got the Wickes bonding agent in the end and have applied that today - it's ideal being pink as I can see exactly where has been covered, unlike with water/pva. I'm going to give it a coat of bonding tomorrow and then two coats of multi. One more question about the Wickes WBA, is there...

Plastering over a thick artex ceiling

Cheers, yeah I've done a few ceilings so have some idea what i'm letting myself in for. I just haven't tackled any with the really thick artex before. Which bonding agent would you say is best if I went down that route?

Plastering over a thick artex ceiling

Hi fellas, Having skimmed most of my house with good results I have been roped in to doing some work for a neighbour. She wants two bathroom ceilings done that have a quite thick fan-patterned artex on them. There's no way I'm up for scraping them right back so if the ceiling seems sound my...

    Kiln-dried sand for render top-coat??

It was actually Wickes bagged 'Plastering Sand'. About twice the price of sharp or building sand too... :x Another point, the wall is saturated from days of endless rain. There's a window in the weather tomorrow and I'm hoping to get the float coat on. Am I ok top coating a wall that will no...

    Kiln-dried sand for render top-coat??

I've now scratch coated a block garden using plastering sand. This sand was very stoney, but has gone on the wall quite nicely. Is there any glaring reason why I couldn't use a finer sand (kiln-dried?) for the top coat to give it a finer finish? Any pro's and Con's? Any thoughts much...

Sand & Cement (Tyrolean Gun) question

Hi fellas, Having lashed up a standard blockwork garden wall, i'm going to render it and then rent a tyrolean gun to finish (to match the house) - a few questions... 1) Any need to PVA the wall? If not, is it doing any harm to use it for better render adherence for an amateur like me...

    Replaceing bars with blockwork

Featheredge stuff? How would you fix that to steel rails? I think it would need arris rails at least, to nail the featheredge to, I guess? Fencing is fine for back gardens, I'm not so sure it would look right in the front though? I'm tempted to just cut the bloody things and see if there...

    Replaceing bars with blockwork

Hi fellas, I want to cut the ugly metal bars and fill in between the pillars with blockwork. My question is, will cutting the bars destabalize the pillars? If so, will the blockwork strengthen them sufficiently? If that all fails, any ideas/advice on how to de-uglify this front garden...

    Plastering those awkward areas...

Cheers for the reply. I looked at getting a midget trowel - 8x3 aren't they? It's the 3" end that I would need be using mainly. Any advice on how to get a great finish on areas a few inches wide, where you can't get a nice 'sweep' with the trowel?

    Plastering those awkward areas...

Evening fellas, Quick question for those way more knowledgable than me! I'm plastering a few rooms in my house, and I'm pretty competent with getting a smooth finish. I'm struggling though when it comes to awkward areas between sockets and skirting etc. Some of the nooks and cranies are...

Air Vent for Wood Burner over 5kw?

Thanks for the reply - So its just a vent in the wall yeah? No piping etc? The room is 12' x 12' living room, but is pretty much open plan through to a same size adjacent dining room. The guy is Hetas registered, doing it through that...

Air Vent for Wood Burner over 5kw?

Hi fellas, I'm planning on having a new wood burning stove fitted and am pondering what Kilowatt output to go for. A 5kw would probably suffice for the size of the room, but ideally I'd like a larger stove with a BIGGER window. :) I'm told that if I go for over 5kw, then I need an...
