Loft ladder increasing opening in roof advice please

Hi, looking to install a larger loft hatch with a proper ladder for easy access into the loft as getting a bit older and finding it hard to access the loft. I have a Double W style truss roof. There is a loft ladder and hatch already installed. I was looking to fit a longer access panel with a...

    Garage Electrics

Will double check the shower but pretty definite that its on an mcb. Surely the installer should have used a seperate board for the shower though. Like installed a rcd and mcb in a seperate 2 way consumer unit?. Or used an rcbo?.

    Garage Electrics

Hi, thanks for getting back. The house was sold with a home report and nothing was mentioned about electrics. There is only 1 cable out to the garage which is 2.5mm twin and earth. There is no water tank in the house it has recently had a combi boiler installed. However as I said the wiring to...

    Garage Electrics

Hi, moved into a bungalow a few months back and was looking at sorting the electrics in the garage. The main unit is an older style consumer unit with fuses. There are 2 6a for left and right side lights in the house. There are 3 30a for 2 rings left and right side and 1 for cooker circuit...

    MK neon locator wiring

Thanks for reply. I will fit the item you suggested. In the living room there is 2 led bulbs powered from 1 switch and these do not flicker or glow. It is only the bedrooms and stair that do it. All bulbs are philips led which are 60w equivalents. 9w I think.

    MK neon locator wiring

Have a few of these fitted in a house I bought. I have led bulbs fitted at top and bottom of stairs and 1 of them flickers then stays on when light is switches off. Had a look at wiring and it is connected to l1 and l2. Also in the bedrooms same thing but these are 1 way lighting so they are...

    Running power to shed

Never said knew better than anyone. The remark about neighbours extension lead was sarcasm. My set up was tested by sse. Who fitted my digi meter to my wiring. Definitely better with the rewire than what was in before. Rubber wire. Ancient fuse box. No earth bonding. Earths were not...

    Running power to shed

Good stuff. I rewired my house, fitted consumer unit. Dont have hundreds of pounds spare to employ a spark. Saved 2500 doing rewire which bought kitchen and bathroom. Reason for asking is just to get opinions on what others would do. Reason for fcu in house is because I was...

    Running power to shed

Hi, finally getting around to putting the power out to my shed. I was wondering if 2.5mm or 4mm should be used?. As above I was planning on a double socket and a light or 2. I would have perhaps a radio plugged in, led lights for the decking plugged in. So from the replies so far...

    Running power to shed

Hi folks, thinking about running power out to my shed and was wondering what would be the best thing to do?. I was going to spur off a socket on the downstairs ring. Then run a cable out the back of the house buried under the ground to the shed. Would probably be 2.5mm armoured cable...

single oven and ceramic hob wiring advice

Thanks for reply. Probably be safer with a spur off the cooker connection?. Would this be with 2.5mm T&E?. So would have the 10mm from the switch above the counter, the hob and a 2.5mm cable connected to the cooker connection?. Then a single socket connected to the end of the 2.5mm...

single oven and ceramic hob wiring advice

Hi, just bought a Hotpoint single oven and a ceramic hob. The oven came with a 13A plug and the Hob came hardwired no plug. The current setup is 10mm cable to a cooker switch above worktops which has a socket on it. Then 10mm from the cooker switch to a cooker connection under the...

    Advice or help please

Perhaps im from a time long gone but perhaps you should read a bit more carefully. All the lighting is on old style wiring. The sockets are on twin and earth with red/black and earth. It would seem that no one on this forum agrees with the other anyway. Each electrician has their own...

    Advice or help please

Yes i would not like to be without heating in a winter up here. I will be mentioning to the gas fitters to put it on its own circuit. Don't know if they will or not. As for wiring the house myself. I would not touch a consumer unit or connect it to mains. I would really like to pay my...

    Advice or help please

Would hardly say its to save a few quid. £1700 + is not a few quid to most people. This is exactly what i mean with people presuming that people are useless and cannot screw in a light bulb. Obviously I would not be doing a bodge job as it is my own house and I know a few electricians...

    Advice or help please

Hi, thanks for all your comments. I am fully aware that it is not an easy task. Never said it was. However as I often find with tradesmen they will often make things a lot more complicated than they are just to show that they know best and every job in the house the builders, joiners...

    Advice or help please

Its comlplicated. Probably end up rewiring house myself and just not bothering about the solicitor or sellers solicitors. Its a long story and just a bit of a mess. I am quite happy now that the electrics and gas have been made safe and I have a working socket. At least I can get on and do...

    Advice or help please

I do not know when shower was fitted I will look at the RCD box maybe there is a date on it. Was reading http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/Doc/217736/0092252.pdf seems that you can pretty much rewire your whole house in Scotland without needing any certificates or contacting building...

    Advice or help please

cheers for getting back. I thought as much in regards to the radiators. As for the fridge/freezer, worktop lights, washing machine and tumble dryer the grid switches were more for visual reasons. My wife wanted the switches with the names of the appliance on them. Is it not similar to a...
