    Condensate pipe, run inside?

can anyone confirm if there is any reason the boiler condensate pipe can't be run inside the house? I've just been told it should go outside but that seems dumb as it involves 6ft run along the outside wall to the nearest drain, while there is a machine waste about 1.5ft directly below it inside :/

    Also Warped Oak Worktops

How did you attach the worktops? Did you screw them down tight or did you give some allowance for movement (e.g. oversize holes in fittings and a washer used with screw, so the screw could move in the fixing hole a bit)

    vegetable oil for worktops?!

An old friend of mine, who's been a carpenter for 50 odd years now, tells me he'd never use anything other than vegetable oil on his worktops, exactly as he uses on bowls he's turned on the lathe. (as in, from the same bottle he pours into his frying pan...) Never heard of it being used...

lead flashing a tiled lean-to roof?

I know the leaf flashing along the top of the lean-to roof goes into a slot cut in the wall, down the wall a bit then dressed over the tiles, but how do you do the flashing down the side of the slop if the roof is in a corner? Looking at neighbours, I can see the lead flashing going into similar...

    LV downlighters

BCO already know as there is a large extension being built that they are supervising. That's the biggest issue with them for me, but failure records with one's I've used even when not cheap rubbish hasn't been great - unfortunately in part that is due to the electricity company seemingly...

    LV downlighters

In South of England - would appreciate it if you do find those sites! :) As for the question above about 230v downlighters, I view them as much the same as 12v ones. Only advantage (in this instance) with ELV is that because of the awkward space I'd be placing more than necessary, so I'd have...

    LV downlighters

Well I assumed anyone wanting to extend them would just use new cable, personally I'd use a bit of solid core 1.5mm, more than capable of handling it. That's the problem though - what? Design is important to me, the whole area is clean, sharp lines and minimalist. bulbs hung...

    LV downlighters

I am indeed. Did wonder if voltage drop was the reason but I couldn't see it happening so discounted it! I'm not overly keen on having them dotted about in the ceiling space - the rate of failure seems quite high and I've seen a couple of badly burned units. The accessible position I could...

    LV downlighters

Can you get LV downlighters that don't have specific wiring lengths between the fitting and the unit? I'd like to fit a total of 9 downlighters, and have a convenient point to put the converters, in a boxed in area that I could fit a small access panel to for when it fails - but it's 4m from...

    design, installation and testing forms?

It's a valid question :) I'm competent to design and install it, not to test it, but as the saying goes I know a man who can. The forms have been requested as part of the proof of competence and will be checked, though it really is rudimentary stuff I'm doing (e.g. a new ring of 14 sockets in...

    design, installation and testing forms?

Any idea what they would be called? Don't have a copy of the BS7671 so can't go that route.

    design, installation and testing forms?

My BCO has told me I can install a new circuit and he sign me off as competent if I complete the above forms - he suggested asking local electrical contractors if they had some but not having much luck that route - anyone know where I could either download some or get hold of some? Many Thanks

    zoning ring mains

Thanks, I was concerned about the ability to recognise the different rings, I think I'll make up a proper location plan and stick beside the consumer unit if I do go down the side by side rings route. I'd have preferred by-floor-zones just for neatness but just realised that would also...

1 way flick switch to dimmer switch

yeah that would be my first suggestion as well - if you've bought an off the shelf single dimmer from somewhere like B&Q they are nearly all 500w units with a minimum of 60w. Was a right pain trying to find one capable of dimming a 40w bulb for our nursery, ended up buying a twin unit and...

    zoning ring mains

I need to start planning the electrics for our extension but wondered if there are any regulations I should be aware of with regards to how you split a place into zones for separate ring mains. Can I zone by rooms? So say have bed 1, bed 2, lounge, kitchen and hallways on ring 1 (the existing...

    Eaves Guard

What's the general consensus on Eaves guards - do you go for a rigid PVC type tray, or a roll of wide DPC tacked under the edge of the felt? I have enough DPC to do the job sitting here free and am somewhat loathed to shell out £50 on some flimsy bits of plastic unless really necessary!

    Rhofelt?!

Anyone here heard of Rhofelt Plus? I have a fairly large roll of it here, unused, but can't find out anything about it other than it's "the breathable anti-slide screen". It came from a (now defunct) merchants several years back for a different project, just trying to ensure if I use it...

Tile baton and quantity of roof tiles

Got the chippies putting the roof up on my extension so thought I ought to think about getting some felt / baton and tiles! Couple of questions - firstly, is there a "standard" size tile baton? Chippies have obviously gauged something to get the new part to meet the old, but they are away for...
