What exactly is a back boiler?

Does the presence of a back boiler suggest this is a very old system? Is it an antiquated style of heating? We are worried that committing to the property would mean a new boiler system being relocated, costing many thousands of pounds! Thanks! Salsa

What exactly is a back boiler?

Hello, We are considering buying a house. It has a back boiler, which is not something we are familiar with. The back boiler seems to be combined with an old fashioned gas fire. Can anyone explain to us exactly what a back boiler is? Would we be able to remove the gas fire, maybe to...

Ball park figure for through lounge conversion

I apologise if I was a little vague. Yes, it is a supporting wall, and will need an RSJ. It will be carried out by professionals, up to a flat plaster finish. We don't want any details/doors. Simple and Clean. Is it wise to recommend people start knocking down random walls? :)

    secondary glazing

Thanks for your concern..... :D Obviously there are lots of options available for the glass itself, eg laminated or toughened. I am more interested in learning about available fixing methods for lift out style units. As it happens, BS6262:1994 Code of practice only requires toughened...

    secondary glazing

Hi! We need to install secondary glazing to a large window in our living room. It has a fixed pane with louvres above it. We want to install a lift out version over the fixed window. We want to build and/or install it ourselves. We have found a few companies around who do the whole build...

    One cool radiator

Hi! We have a cold radiator in our bedroom. The inlet pipe is warm, but not much heat is getting into the radiator (maybe a bit through conduction?). We have removed the rad and flushed it through, but it has not helped. We have tried turning down all the other radiators as an experiment, but...

    Do I need to size?

HI We are redecorating and have taken the old wallpaper down in the bathroom. I was wondering if I needed to size the walls before putting up the new lining paper or if this is something you only need to do on newly plastered walls? Thanks!

    Bathroom electrics

The cable just comes through the partition wall behind some woodwork. The FCU is actually part of the switch in the kitchen. The new cable will be surface mounted within plastic conduit.

    Breeched boiler regulations?

Not sure of the terminology but the boiler is an Ariston Eurocombi A/23 which I believe has ita vent and air supply combined in the flue. If we box in the boiler do the zone regulations still apply since the appliance can't be touched?

    Bathroom electrics

The supply cable actually comes from a wall-mounted isolating switch in the adjoining kitchen. Whats an FCU?

    Bathroom electrics

Hi We are having a radiator fitted into our bathroom making the wall-mounted fan heater redundant. We also have a condensation problem (possibly caused by the lack of heating). Can we install a humidity controlled extractor fan using the power supply from the old fan heater? If...

    Breeched boiler regulations?

Hi I just had a plumber in to get a quote on installing a radiator and mixer shower in my small bathroom. He is refusing to get involved in the project as he says the site of the current boiler does not comply with regulations as it is to close to the bath. (It is on the wall at the foot...
