out of curiosity,

if you were to extend a ring main on a old db you need to add a rcd and check main bonding is correct and inplace, but wont that mean a new db would need to be added as lights need to be on a seperate rcd?

just wondering how you guys get any work ie:
mr smith phones just wanting a couple extra sockets - now needs pir, new bonding, db, poss re-wire, test insp etc etc...

Make sure the cable of the extended part of the circuit you install is 50mm deep then install these

Not in the spirit of the regs so I tend to go down the path of

Remove socket circuit cable from ocpd in cu
install 6mm t/e from old socket circuit ocpd into one of these

housed in one of these

Locate the above next to old cu.
Reinstall old socket circuit cable/s into the load side terminals of the rcd.

Hey presto the complete socket circuit is now rcd protected & no need to change the cu or play with the lighting circuit.
;)

If you are asked to extend a ring main simply do the work and make sure it is RCD protected. Most are. Complete an EIC (or even a MWC) for the ring main and make sure main bonding is in place. You do not have to touch the rest of the circuits or change the CU.
