The string on my pull cord light switch
(two-way)has broken and needs replacing however the new switch is different in design to the old one. I know where the Earth goes. The old one is wired as follows:

1 Yellow going to C
2 Red going to N
1 Blue & 1 Black both tagged red going to an unmarked connector.

Should the new one be wired as follows:

1 Yellow going to L1
2 Red going to Common L (because these are live)
1 Blue & 1 Black both tagged red going to L2

Any advice appreciated. Cheers.

Wrong!

Yellow goes to Common L. Get this right and you can't fail because ---
Both reds go to either L1 or L2, it doesn't matter.
Blue and black go to whichever of L1 and L2 hasn't got the reds in it.

When wiring two way switches, always know which of the three termanals is COMMON. Labelling can vary but C, COM, COMMON and COMMON L are all pretty unambiguous.

Incidentally, you seem to have had a well wired switch. Not everybody bothers to sleeve the blue and black with red.

Felix - your a star! Fixed new fitting - all working fine. Ta very much. [/img]

Why didn't you just replace the cord (technical term for string !!). If the clutch goes in my car, I replace the clutch, not the car !
