HERTSDRAINAGE2010 - The current insulation is in such a bad state I was just going to remove it. I was intending to put down 100 mm between the joists and then 170mm going across the joists. This will only cost me about £60.
Regarding the pipe above the window in picture 2. I am unable to access that part of the loft so I cannot be certain what it is.
We now have a combi boiler installed, the boiler and all the piping can be found against the left wall in the eaves area as looking at picture 1, so I doubt it has anything to do with central heating etc, unless it was from the old system.
Edit: Having just spoke with one of my neighbours, it appears you are correct in saying it was linked to the old central heating system.
