I find it very strange that because the temperature is 30c (85) we have health warnings, and advised not to go out between 11 and 3. I recall from my childhood in the 50's and 60's the sun was shining for most of the 6 week school holiday, the temperature was hot enough to fry eggs on the pavement and tar to melt on the road. We rarely bothered with a shirt and in the unlikely event of sunburn calamine lotion sorted it. We had never heard of skin cancer and never used sun creams. The main difference was that we spent all our free time outdoors and not stuck indoors in front a screen. No doubt the boffins will say the records show otherwise, but we did'n't have computers to fiddle the figures, and I was there. It is my belief that today's panic about temperature is to advance the myth of global warming after two b****y cold summers

Different type of tar no doubt, but I remember those days, it never seemed to get dark, sent to bed when still light, couldnt sleep, Sunday night at the Palladium, oh the good old days..

I feel its down to todays "leisure time" Im not that old at 28 and when I was younger spent at least 2hrs every evening playing outside, rain, shine whatever the weather, now everyone sits indoors "Socialising" on pcs, games consoles etc so the body doesn't weather the same, consequently the least bit of sunshine makes everyone into a crispy critter.

Im surprised we haven't had a hosepipe ban yet, wev'e had at least 3 days on sunshine, must be a drought surely??

whilst I'm on a rant, all that snow and ice a few months back, is that down to global warming too?????

Whilst in Perth WA in 1999 the mercury hit 50.4 degrees C, lowering to 28.6 degrees C during the coldest part of the night. As a tourist, it was more than I could bear. Even the locals were struggling. A mere 30 degrees is uncomfortable I agree but hardly 'hot'.

In Dubai in 2003 the mercury hit 49 and with a relative humidity of 93%. Clothes would be hung to dry in the morning and be just as wet at 6pm.

NHS? Who needs it. Have a cool drink (plenty in fact) and enjoy the warmth.

Interesting comments

Being in the air conditioning industry since 82 I have spent many a happy hour discussing our weather with various sorts. The most obvious one is that often people moan in June or July that we have -yet again- another rubbish summer.

I always point out that our perception of 'summer' is taken from when the schools break up -IE end of July and August. At that point you can see they penny drops as when they think back 'summer' is school holiday. not before.
Also it's often still warm when we all went back in September -only that was always called an 'Indian summer'
So yes it was always mostly warm during summertime and we lapped it up

Cheers

I don't think anyone is worried about fit and healthy people - as always it's the elderly and infirm who are at greatest risk. I can't honestly imagine building sites across the country empty as brickies run screaming for the nearest parasol to zinc up their noses.

I think this shows that an obsession about the weather really is a British stereotype. Pass the tea and crumpets please!

A few years back I had an air-conditioned home and during any warm weather was going from a/c flat to a/c car to a/c office, then home via a/c supermarket and later on to an a/c bar. Within a year I was a complete pansy in the heat, you just become accustomed to having it just right all the time. Now I have a house with no a/c, a car with no a/c (if you want to feel cooler, you have to drive faster ;) ) and work in an office with rubbish a/c. Seem to adapt much better!

I have never been a fan of air/con. And i work in an office with rubbish air/con...(it is a con!).
I much prefer cold and wet.... i think your body copes better with the cold.... and then you can add more clothing... but this heat... inescapable !

Totally agree - was having just this conversation last week - we as a nation seem unable to cope with anything these days - either because we act like we can't, or because officials suggest we can't. Last week we were on Level 6 Swine Flu Pandemic Alert and Level 3 Heat Health alert - but despite these worrying 'alerts' my life carried on as normal - in fact i was on holiday in Norfolk and loved every minute of the 'heat-wave'. I'm not that old and yet i recall weeks of hot sunny weather as a child and don't recall everyone complaining and worrying about 'the end of the world'?? Its summer, its warm, just enjoy it before the rain starts again!!

Here here!

Too many people today spend so much time indoors they can't cope with normal sunny weather ... Get out and soak up some UV ... natures way.

Forget all the doo-goody sh1te.
