I've recently bought spotlights from B&Q which say on the instructions that they require a 30ma RCD.

Does anyone no if and where I can get a 30ma RCD for a 22 year old MEM board? I've been told in a few stores that you can't get one and would need to buy a new board.

I couple of guys have also said you don't really need an RCD for bathroom lights especially given they are zone 3 lights. Any thoughts.

Thanks

Thats a new one on me. Unless they are specifically for bathrooms, or the instruction is with regard to installing in a bathroom.

You can get RCD FCUs, and if you're lucky and the bathroom light is the last on the circuit, you can tap into the supply and fit one. Easiest way to do it.

While we should always follow the manufacturer's instructions, it's likely that B&Q have only put this requirement in there as a catch-all, as they expect their fittings to be installed by Joe DIY'er with little/know knowledge of the regulations concerning electrical work.

If they will be going in zone 3, you are only adding/extending an existing circuit (not adding a new circuit to the bathroom), and you have no intention of burying cables in the wall, there is no requirement for RCD protection.

You should still make sure that supplementary bonding is up to scratch.

Also, zone 3 has been scrapped under BS7671:2008 (17th edition) but still comes into play for notification under Part P which stupidly refers to BS7671:2001 (16th edition).
