Our rooms have a very long reverb' of which say if you pick up a coffee mug' it sings' metals the likes of wires and other mateials sing' bathroom tiles sound' the door posts sound hollow' bringing down roof noise' infra-noise' if you clap your hands it clacks and hurts your ears' The light switches are very loud' this old house seems to be very noisy' sometimes the likes of a Tibetan singing bowl' the back drain outside seems to sing at a a high pitch' the likes of bone chiner gently clattering
The sound has given me quite bad tinitus'
Is there some way of cutting this down somewhat'
My first thought woul be to mastik every wood furnishing to the walls' the likes of window frames and door frames' but how dos one stop the plaster boards singing off the door noises' or if the dog barks' going to be quite deaf my wife an myself if we can no get a handle on this'

Apreciated in avance'

P.S. there is no way you can run a fan or airconditioner here cos the high frequency wine woulkd just do your ears in'

Could a lot of the extended reverb be down to transformer substation hum' if so how would one go about deflecting such frequencies and sound proofing the house rooms' ! !

I am sorry to say that it is your ear problems that are causing the irritation, not the house that is causing the tinnitus.

What did your doctor/ear specialist say?

I have egg trays on the ceiling and walls in my drum room and that cuts the noise out. ;)

Still got tinnitus though. ... Doc says to turn the radio up louder.

OK We take a tunning fork' ring it and then turn a circle slowly in the room' the tunning fork rings for a very long time in one direction' say from the front of the house to the back' but you point it across the house' it sounds kind of dead' So the tunning fork is picking up and resonating with sound waves in a specific line' My wife and my ears are fine' We only get the reverb singing effect in our house' no other peoples houses'

I am leaning towards infra sound and transformer hum' being collected by the new industrial recycles bins (one of the reasons they fit brushes in the tops of these bins' is they collect and amplify sound) we have positioned at the end of an ally way' that leads to the transformer substation' the hum is 600mhz' just out of normal hearing range, but would most definiataley get things humming in the house' Hollow wood frame furnishings with gaps in the seems brings roof noise into the rooms also'and resonate the plaster boards in specific places'

Appreciate the input'

OK getting to the reason for the house noise and stuff'

Work done on the combi boiler' the chap clamped the six pipes together below the boiler with a 10mm steel band' making the noise travel from each pipe and sound through the boiler and the roof ducting' making the pipeing and the radiators sing with infra sound from the roofspace'

The pipes should be seperate' earthed by proper earth wire so as each pipe is kept sound seperated from the other'

The clamps removed' the house goes reasonably quiet again'

The industrial recycle bins in no way helped' becasue they just added more noise by their collection / deflection of infra sound at the roof space'
Bad shoddy workmanship by the engineer brought all the roof noise into the house'

So no tinitus' just singing pipes and roof duct noise brought down into the house' by clamping six pipes tightly together' this added vibration changed the accoustics of the house' making all the bad seams/wall to wood furnishings echo subtly from roof and room noise'

If you have this problem' check to make sure all the wood furnishings are fixed tightly to the walls' and sealed with filler or mastic' all the window frames sealed inside and out with mastick' draft excluders on the doors' then check to see if all the pipework of the house is seperate from each other' never two pipes touching' never SIX pipes clamped together' check that all plasterboards/walls and ceilings are secured' so they no sound' seal all tiles and check all the grouting has no holes in it' fit fire retardent material' the likes of glass wool behind light sockets and wall points' fill in all the cracks' make sure they are fitted tightly' all noise by rights should go out through the roof space' make sure the doorframe furnishinghs are sealed tightly into the ceiling boards' then the wood furnishings pick up the sound and send it into the roof space' kind of like an accoustic baffle'
Then get some tar sheets and cover the bottom of your metal kitchen sink and your metal bath also' and make sure your toilet overflow pipe is fitted with a T so as to keep a lot of the outbuilding sound' outside' seal the top of the cystern' if you have chaneling with wiring and such in' in the rooms' seal the ends' so the sound can in no way bounce around inside them' mastic seal them to the wallls'

If you still got the problem after this' then fit arcutectured cylinders in the roof space to collect the house noise and baffle it'

Double glasing and good thick curtains! !
Good thick wall hangings ! !

After our recent experience' I would say that many folks complaining of tinitus' have their cause in accoustic room noise and infra sound'
Most of this stuff is outside of normal hearing range' but loose room furnishings can amplify this noise' along with badly lagged piping and roof ducting !

Appreciate your time folks'

Be well
