I have a split landing at the top of my (steep) stairs (see photo). Is there any issue people can see with adding a step?

It means the landing will be one level. Maybe it won't fit before the door and look odd... But probably be safer.

Take care to make shape of the new step as close as possible to the shape of the existing steps. ( Height especially ) A small change in shape of stair in a flight of stairs can disorientate a person walking up or down the stairs and finding the "floor" of a step is not where they expect it to be ( compared the the rhythm of the previous steps). This disorientation can lead to a fall.

That said I did just that to create a space to enable some pipes to be re-routed.

The 2 inch difference from new step to landing floor level does confuse the feet.
